Becoming Involved in Missions

All Southside members, and other Christians that God may call to service, are encouraged to become involved in the missions activities at Southside Baptist Church.  Generally, you may participate by giving, going or praying.

Please won't you pray about joining God on mission?

On-Going Missions Opportunities

Local Missions - The Salvation Army

by Ross Covington

Did you know that several of our members feed the hungry and homeless in HUNTSVILLE? We partner with the Salvation Army one Saturday per month. They call on us sometimes to supplement or substitute for another team that can't respond, on other days. And they often need substitute drivers on short notice.

One Disaster Relief worker with years of experience wants to continue serving but his mother-in-law now lives with them and requires considerable assistance so he can no longer go on the International or National Mission Trips. So, he is very thankful for the opportunity to serve locally. He has offered his services as a substitute driver often.

The Salvation Army provides the prepared food and loads it into their small Canteen (a step van) which we drive to deliver God's love to the needy. We sometimes provide drinks such as iced tea, Gatorade or Koolaid so the "clients" have more than just water to drink. On occasion the teams have had to purchase additional food if they run out before all are fed.

If you would like to join us, we leave The Salvation Army (TSA) facility at 305 Seminole Dr., Huntsville, AL at 5:30 PM and feed at two locations, on the first Saturday of every month.

Local Missions - Sparkman Homes

by Helga Hayes

Can you image growing up and going to bed hungry, failing in school because there is no one to help with homework, hearing nothing but curse words, not knowing your father's name, wearing dirty clothes because that is all you have. Now imagine these same children saying "I love you" after five minutes of knowing you, loving to play games, running to hug you when you come, craving attention, eager to learn Bible stories and wanting to know the next time you will come to see them. These precious ones do not live in a remote part of the world. They are right here in Huntsville!

Southside Baptist Church has been sponsoring mission trips on Sunday evenings to an area stricken with poverty, drugs, truancy and teenage pregnancy. We teach the Word of God, play basketball, make crafts and feed children ages 5 — 18. No special training is required, just a willingness to give of your heart and time. If you have always wanted to make a difference in the life of a child, please come and join the Southside team who ministers to these children. In May, an average of 50 children was ministered to by our team, and within the past year several children have made professions of faith.

If you would like to first see what the team does one Sunday night, meet by the church van in the parking lot next to the church on the Marsheutz side at 5:30 p.m. For further information, contact Dana Watwood at 895-3313.

"Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, "Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?" And I said, "Here am I. Send me!" Is. 6:8

Meals on Wheels

by Maeve Brackin

Meals on Wheels provides hot, nutritiously balanced meals delivered each weekday to elderly homebound persons. The Meals on Wheels TeamThe volunteers are sometimes the only person checking on these lonely people. They just need to know someone cares and will bring a big smile or hug their way, as well as a hot meal.

Churches all over Huntsville help in delivering the 240 meals, with 22 - 44 volunteers working daily. Southside, other churches and businesses also help financially. Our team delivers 10 of the 22 routes on the first Wednesday of each month and when there is a fifth Wednesday. More . . .
