The American Indian

by Raymond Dunton — Wings of Freedom Ministries

Jesus, Cross, Dove with flagNovember has become the designated month "for recognizing and celebrating the intertribal cultures and to educate the public about the heritage, history, art, and traditions of the American Indian and Alaska Native people." This Presidential proclamation has its roots dating back to the early 1900's and its creation was influenced by such individuals as Dr. Arthur C. Parker (Seneca), Rev. Sherman Coolidge (Arapaho), Rev. Philip B. Gordon (Ojibwa), Carlos Montezuma (Yavapai) and Red Fox James (Blackfeet). Since that time, there has been an understanding by both Church and State that a hearty co-operation was needed by Natives and non-Natives in order to recapture the Father God's heart: "...if the world be against us, let us not be dismayed, let us not be discouraged, let us look up and ahead, and fight on for freedom..."

Today the American Indians and Alaska Natives are experiencing a Cultural Renaissance. "The tide has turned." "A prominent symbol of rebirth, the National Museum of the American Indian opened in Washington, D.C., in 2004, taking an integral place among the pantheons on the National Mall." "Native Americans have never been more hopeful about their cultural future. That hope is grounded in a newly developed and profound sense of worthiness of who they are." – Museum Director, W. Richard West, Jr. (Cheyenne & Arapaho Tribes of Oklahoma)

"The greatest moments of Native history may lie ahead of us if a great spiritual renewal and awakening should take place. The Native American has been a sleeping giant. He is awakening. The original Americans could become the evangelists who will help win America for Christ! Remember these forgotten people!" – Dr. Billy Graham
